Six Weeks Inside the Crowd Cow Subscription

We let the algorithm pick six boxes in a row. The good, the great, and the one item we would never order again.

Six Weeks Inside the Crowd Cow Subscription

Crowd Cow's subscription model invites you to either handpick every item or let the algorithm curate your box based on your preferences. We chose the latter for six consecutive weeks to see how well the platform learns and whether it can replace the decision-making of a skilled butcher.

Box One: Strong Start

The first box contained a A5 Japanese Wagyu striploin, a Flannery beef dry-aged ribeye, and free-range chicken thighs. The Wagyu was worth the price of admission on its own — seared in a dry carbon steel pan with nothing but salt, it was the richest thing I had eaten since the last time I was in Tokyo. The Flannery ribeye was extraordinary. The chicken was fine.

Box Two and Three: The Algorithm Learns

We rated the Wagyu and ribeye five stars and the chicken three. The algorithm responded promptly — box two skewed heavily toward beef with a heritage pork tomahawk chop as the wildcard. Box three brought two cuts we had never tried from Crowd Cow: a flat iron from a specific ranch in Montana and a bavette from a grass-fed program in California. Both were excellent and both expanded our repertoire.

Box Four: The Stumble

Box four contained a ground beef variety pack. Three pounds of various blends. We understand why the algorithm suggested it — ground beef is popular and the margins work in the platform's favor — but it felt like a retreat from the high-quality single cuts we had been raving about. We rated it two stars and left a note requesting whole cuts only going forward. The platform adjusted immediately.

Box Five and Six: Recovery and a Highlight

Boxes five and six were excellent. Box five brought a Mishima Reserve American Wagyu chuck short rib that we braised for eight hours and ate over three days. Box six was perhaps the best single item in the entire test: a Crowd Cow exclusive Kagoshima Prefecture A5 Wagyu chuck roll that they source directly from Japan. At $128 for a single cut it was the most expensive item in the six-week run. It was also the best.

Verdict

The Crowd Cow subscription is one of the two we recommend without reservation (the other is ButcherBox for value). The platform learns quickly, the transparency around farm sourcing is best-in-class, and when the algorithm is on, it surfaces cuts you would never have found browsing the site yourself. Rate every box and leave notes — the system genuinely responds to feedback.
